The Casa do Cereiro

The Casa do Cereiro is the hayloft of a farmhouse that used to have that name because there was a small pottery workshop.

The old barn, rebuilt in 1947, has now been renovated to convert it into a rural tourism house.

We wanted to maintain its essence: we kept the chestnut and oak beams and crossbeams, we redid the wooden railing that runs along the inside of the façade and we built two exterior walls in wood using the Japanese Yakisugi and Kaki technique to protect them from the weather. The rest is stone, glass and wood.

The house is shaded by a vine on the outside. There is also a salt pool, suitable for people with skin sensitivities and we are surrounded by a large estate with oak trees to walk around and connect with nature.

The Chandlery. Our history.

Casa do Cereiro is linked to my grandfather’s trade, who made candles, in a family tradition that goes back 4 generations. They travelled around the mountains of A Coruña through different villages, going as far as the city, to extract honey from the beehives. For doing this work, they kept the wax, with which, once back home, they made the candles that they sold to light the houses and also for events and masses. In the wax factory, that we still have and which we restored after it burnt down in 1980, there is the noque, the paila and utensils (burnishers, carving tools…) used to make the candles and some moulds, which were saved from the fire, to make votive offerings. At the age of 94, Cereiro de Lagartóns made the last curled candles and realised that his fingers no longer responded to him.

The name of the house is a tribute to him and to my grandmother who, tirelessly, helped to keep the pottery going. They both kept the memory of a world that has now disappeared and which shows what life and work in rural Galicia was like.

Casa do Cereiro is located in a privileged area, less than 2 kilometres from the centre of the village of A Estrada, with all its amenities, and 20 kilometres from Santiago de Compostela.

It is surrounded by countless places of tourist interest, such as monasteries, forts or river beaches, which you can discover in this guide.
